CITI Training

CITI stands for Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative. This initiative promotes a better understanding of how to best protect the rights and welfare of human participants in research. Issues related to this topic are complex – this Handbook, in combination with the training provided through CITI, will give you the basics. You must complete your CITI training prior to submitting your IRB Review Form – and the earlier, the better, as the training may help you make important decisions regarding how you design your project or study. When it is time to begin this training, you will be prompted in the appropriate course. How long it will take to complete the training depends on multiple factors, including previous experience with IRBs and reading speed. That said, it is recommended that you set aside 15-30 hours. Each module has a quiz, and you must pass with 80%, so note-taking is encouraged.

You will complete three courses:

  1. Researchers - Information Privacy & Security (IPS),
  2. Social and Behavioral Responsible Conduct of Research, and
  3. Social-Behavioral-Educational (SBE) Comprehensive.

Once you complete your training, save your electronic certificates because you will need them when submitting your materials for IRB review. Your certification is valid for three years; your certification must be valid for at least one year from the time you submit to the IRB (if training will expire within the year, it must be renewed prior to submitting to the IRB). To make the IRB process efficient, consider creating an IRB folder and saving all the documents you will need for your submission in that folder.
