Policy: The USU IRB reviews all research conducted by the research community, whether federally funded or not. Generally, the USU IRB will apply the Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects (the Common Rule) to all human subject research conducted at this institution regardless of the funding source.
Non-federally funded research is subject to the same scrutiny except where otherwise described. Specifically, non-federally funded research:
- is eligible for additional exemption categories (see 700-21: Exempt Research Activities)
- has different reporting requirements from the IRB to OHRP regarding any of the following actions (see 700-35: Institutional Reporting Procedures):
- determines that an event represents an unanticipated problem involving risks to participants or others
- determines that non-compliance was serious or
- suspends or terminates approval of research
Purpose: This policy clarifies the differences related to the review of federally funded research and non-federally funded research.
Scope: This policy applies to all non-federally funded research.
