402-3 - New Course Approval Process

Policy: When a new course is required for either a new or existing program it must go through an approval process as outlined below.

Purpose: The purpose of this policy is to detail the procedure for obtaining approval for a new course.

Procedures:

  1. The need for a new course is identified either through the approval of a new program or through faculty teaching in current programs.
  2.  A new course approval is initiated in the academic department following Program Director review and approval.
  3. The course is discussed and approved at either the Curriculum Committee (CONHS) or the bi-monthly Curriculum Meetings (COE and COBTM) for approval.
  4. The course is sent to the Dean for approval.
  5. Upon receipt of approval from the Dean, sent to the Office of the Registrar and the Office of the Provost.
  6. The Office of Registrar will review:
    1. to prevent duplication of course offerings,
    2. assess resource implications,
    3. provide notification to other colleges of changes in course offerings that may affect their students or programs, and
    4. review for alpha and course prefix code to prepare for the action to be recorded and entered in the Course Inventory File.
  7. The Office of the Provost will:
    1. place the course on the schedule (course will be prioritized based on the current course development schedule and the urgency of the request) and communicate this to the Program Director
  8. Course is developed (see 402-1).
  9. Once the course is developed, the new course is reflected in the catalog and other official records.

Scope: This policy applies to all new courses.
