Policy: When a new course is required for either a new or existing program it must go through an approval process as outlined below.
Purpose: The purpose of this policy is to detail the procedure for obtaining approval for a new course.
Procedures:
- The need for a new course is identified either through the approval of a new program or through faculty teaching in current programs.
- A new course approval is initiated in the academic department following Program Director review and approval.
- The course is discussed and approved at either the Curriculum Committee (CONHS) or the bi-monthly Curriculum Meetings (COE and COBTM) for approval.
- The course is sent to the Dean for approval.
- Upon receipt of approval from the Dean, sent to the Office of the Registrar and the Office of the Provost.
- The Office of Registrar will review:
- to prevent duplication of course offerings,
- assess resource implications,
- provide notification to other colleges of changes in course offerings that may affect their students or programs, and
- review for alpha and course prefix code to prepare for the action to be recorded and entered in the Course Inventory File.
- The Office of the Provost will:
- place the course on the schedule (course will be prioritized based on the current course development schedule and the urgency of the request) and communicate this to the Program Director
- Course is developed (see 402-1).
- Once the course is developed, the new course is reflected in the catalog and other official records.
Scope: This policy applies to all new courses.
