Improvement Plan
USU is committed to supporting Teacher Interns in successfully meeting academic, professional, and clinical practice expectations. When an instructor identifies a Teacher Intern who requires additional support to successfully complete coursework, the instructor, academic advisor, and intern will collaborate to identify areas of concern and develop an Improvement Plan. The plan will outline specific areas requiring improvement, identified goals, required actions, available supports, and timelines for demonstrating progress. Successful completion of the Improvement Plan, as determined by the instructor, must occur prior to the intern’s successful completion of the course.
When a USU University Supervisor identifies that a Teacher Intern is not meeting established clinical practice standards or program expectations, the University Supervisor and the Program Director will meet with the Intern to discuss concerns and collaboratively develop an Improvement Plan. The plan will identify performance expectations, required supports, opportunities for improvement, and criteria for successful completion.
Based on the intern’s progress:
- If the Intern successfully fulfills the goals and requirements of the Improvement Plan, the Intern may continue in the program and advance to the next Internship course.
- If the Intern does not successfully fulfill the goals of the Improvement Plan, additional interventions may be required, which may include extended support, additional observations, targeted activities, or removal from the internship placement, consistent with program policies.
- If the Intern continues to demonstrate an inability to meet academic, professional, or clinical practice standards, the Dean of the COE may initiate the program dismissal process in accordance with USU policies and procedures.
Counseling out and/or dismissal decisions are subject to the rights and procedures outlined in USU’s student appeal process.
