Teacher Performance Expectations (TPES) (Program Learning Outcomes)
There are seven California Teaching Performance Expectations (TPEs) that define the knowledge, skills, and abilities teacher candidates are expected to demonstrate during preparation and prior to recommendation for a teaching credential. TPEs 1–6 align with the six California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTPs), while TPE 7, Effective Literacy Instruction for All Students, was added following the passage of SB 488 to strengthen preparation in evidence-based literacy instruction. All TPEs are considered equally important and integral to effective teaching practice.
The COE’s Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) 1-6 are aligned with CSTPs 1-6, and PLOs 1-7 are aligned with TPEs 1-7, to help Student Teachers directly associate their goals and progress in the seven TPEs through evaluations at the end of each term which is completed by their University Supervisor and Cooperating Teacher. Refer to the Student Teacher Evaluation form in the Appendix of this document.
