The Teacher Intern

Pre-Service Requirements

Prior to intern eligibility, candidates have a pre-service requirement that includes 120 hours of pre-service time through the following 12 semester units of coursework and the fieldwork components within each course.

 

  1. EDU 503 Foundations of Education
  2. EDU 525 English Language Developmental Strategies for English Learners
  3. EDU 510 Introduction to Classroom Instruction
  4. EDU 504 Introduction to Special Education

Candidates find their own employment and complete an additional intern application with the College of Education and with the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.  Internships may be completed only in public school districts with which the program has a current internship agreement.  

The Teacher Intern’s Responsibilities

  • Make personal contact with the Site Supervisor to discuss lesson plans, schedules, observations, conferencing, and evaluation
  • Gather information about the school. Candidates ask for copies of Student, Teacher, Parent Handbooks, maps, schedules, school calendar.
  • Review important crisis information such as fire drills.
  • Learn about duties the school requires of USU teacher interns, such as:
    • Be present at the school site during regular teacher hours
    • Collaborate with Site Supervisor for planning and teaching lessons
    • Be responsible for all teacher duties. These may include supervising, yard duty, cafeteria duty, before school yard supervision, bus duty, staff meetings, in-service, etc.
  • Discuss student progress regularly with the Site Supervisor and University Supervisor.
  • Complete routine tasks and responsibilities in the classroom and in general school tasks.
  • Attend internship courses at the University.
  • Review the State Framework and the State and District Standards.
  • Design lesson plans carefully and submit them to the Site Supervisor and University Supervisor, as appropriate.
  • Confer with Site Supervisor and University Supervisor after the mid-term and end of term evaluations.

Internship Requirements

  • Two formal lesson presentations for USU Supervisor per Internship Course
  • Two formal lesson presentations for the Site Supervisor per Internship Course
  • Evaluation conferences with Site Supervisor and USU Supervisor
  • Evaluation of USU Supervisor and Site Supervisor
  • Evaluation of field experience
  • Attendance in Internship courses
  • Presentation of all documents to University Supervisor
  • Program exit interview
