Title: Orientation
Owner: Director of Academic Advising
Last Update/Revised: 05/01/2024

Policy: All students are encouraged to complete the online self-guided new student orientation prior to the start of their first course. The online orientation provides an opportunity for students to engage in various videos of useful information. There are also several interactive activities for new students to practice in a mock classroom environment including: how to submit assignments, participate in discussions, and a practice quiz to check overall comprehension. The orientation also provides students the opportunity to learn about course structure, expectations, grading criteria, resources, policies, and procedures.

In addition, international students are required to attend the mandatory orientation at the USU campus. Students will check in with their International Student Advisor who will orient them on academic and classroom success and SEVP/SEVIS regulation requirements.

Purpose: The purpose of this policy is to orient the student on navigating the online environment, understanding course and program expectations, developing time management skills, and exploring the universities available resources to help set the foundation for success.

Procedure:

  1. After an applicant has been accepted, they will receive an auto-generated email with their login credentials to set up their USU email address, including their account for the Learning Management System (LMS).
    1. For assistance with login or access, students should contact Student Services at studentservices@usuniversity.edu.
  2. The new student orientation can be found in the LMS.
  3. After completing the new student orientation, students are encouraged to schedule an orientation and welcome call with their academic advisor. The advisor will contact the student who will answer questions or provide clarification to any material covered in the orientation.

Scope: This policy applies to all students.
